Black Friday Marketing Strategy: Follow 4 Stages From October to Beat Sale-Week Costs

black friday marketing strategy

A Black Friday marketing strategy that starts in November buys the year’s most expensive attention from people who have never heard of you. One that starts in October buys it earlier, at lower prices, from people who know your name by sale week.

Black Friday 2026 falls on 27 November. This article explains why ad costs climb that week, what to build in October, and how to split the budget across platforms. It also covers what cash on delivery adds: an order placed is not yet a sale.

What Is Black Friday and How Long Does It Last?

Black Friday is the Friday after US Thanksgiving, and it opens the biggest shopping season of the year. In 2026 it falls on 27 November, and Cyber Monday follows on 30 November.

For a retailer, it is a quarter rather than a day. Jumia, the listed e-commerce group that counts Egypt among its largest markets, names the fourth quarter, which holds Black Friday, as especially important for its revenue.

White Friday and Black Friday: One Season

Many retailers in Egypt and the Gulf run the same season as White Friday. Friday is the weekly holy day across the region, and the lighter name sits more easily with shoppers.

The name changes nothing in the plan. Shoppers in Egypt search for both names, in Arabic and in English, so your ads and landing pages should carry both.

How Long Black Friday Sales Last in Egypt

Large retailers stretch the sale well beyond one Friday. Jumia’s annual report refers to “Jumia Black Fridays”, in the plural, among the events its sellers can join.

For a smaller business, a sale week of seven to ten days around 27 November is a realistic window. The ads that win that week start earning attention weeks earlier.

Why Black Friday Ad Costs Rise in Sale Week

Ad platforms sell attention in an auction. When more advertisers bid for the same people on the same days, the price of each impression and each click rises.

The biggest retailers load their budgets into this quarter. Jumia spent $7.0 million on sales and advertising in the fourth quarter of 2025, up 47% on a year earlier. That is more than a third of the $19.4 million it spent across the whole year.

Every Advertiser Chases the Same Audience

Your ad enters the same auction as the largest retailers in the country. Jumia’s annual report names Amazon and Noon as its competitors in Egypt, and notes that some competitors copy its marketing campaigns.

A business that joins the auction only in sale week pays the peak price for every click. It also has no audience of its own to fall back on.

A Cold Audience Doesn’t Buy in One Week

A shopper who meets your brand for the first time on Black Friday compares you with names they already trust. One week is rarely enough to move them from first sight to first order.

A warm audience behaves differently. People who watched your videos, visited your site or bought before need a reason to buy now, not a reason to trust you.

Black Friday Campaign Goals to Choose From

The goal decides the platform, the offer and the measure of success. A campaign chasing three goals at once usually reaches none of them.

Direct Sales During Black Friday Week

If the goal is revenue that week, the budget goes to people already looking. That means search ads and retargeting of past visitors and buyers, measured in delivered orders and the margin they leave.

A Lead List Waiting for the Offer

If the goal is to build demand, October ads collect sign-ups for early access by WhatsApp or email. Success is the size of that list and the cost of each sign-up, before any discount goes live.

Clearing Specific Stock Through the Sale

If the goal is to clear stock, the product picks the audience. Jumia’s annual report warns that building inventory for events such as Black Friday can hurt working capital and cash flow, and can end in stock losses and write-downs.

A clearance campaign turns that stock back into cash. Measure it in units sold and cash recovered, not in margin.

What to Build in October Before the Sales

October is the cheaper month to buy attention, and the month to learn what works. Three things built now decide how November performs.

A Warm Audience to Retarget in November

Run video and engagement ads in October to the people you want to sell to in November. Everyone who watches, visits or engages becomes an audience you can reach again in sale week, already familiar with your name.

Performance Data That Shows the Winning Ad

Test two or three messages and offers in October on small budgets. By November you know which one turns attention into orders.

The sale-week budget then goes behind a proven ad instead of a guess.

An Offer Priced on Margin, Not on Discount

Price the offer from the margin down. Take the margin on the product, subtract the expected cost of winning each order in sale week, and what remains is the discount you can afford.

Take a product sold at EGP 1,000 with a 35% margin, which leaves EGP 350. If each sale-week order costs EGP 150 to win, any discount above EGP 200 sells at a loss.

Black Friday Marketing Strategy by Platform

Each platform reaches shoppers at a different point in their decision. The split follows your goal and how warm your audience already is.

Google Ads for People Searching for Deals

Search ads reach people typing the product or the offer into Google. Intent is high, and so is competition in sale week.

Google Ads works hardest on precise product and brand terms, where the click comes from someone ready to buy.

Facebook and Instagram for Undecided Buyers

Meta’s platforms reach people before they search. They suit the October build-up and sale-week retargeting, when a visitor needs a reminder and a reason.

Social media advertising carries both jobs. For what that reach costs in the local market, see our breakdown of Facebook advertising cost in Egypt.

TikTok Ads for the Younger Audience

TikTok reaches a younger audience that finds products through short videos. It pays off when the product makes sense in a few seconds.

It also needs a steady supply of fresh videos through the season. One video carried across six weeks tires fast.

Platform Rules and Why Ads Get Rejected

Google and Meta check every ad against their advertising policies. Discount claims the landing page doesn’t show, prices that don’t match, and exaggerated urgency are common reasons an ad gets held back.

Submit sale-week ads days before launch. A rejection then leaves time to fix it instead of costing the first day of the sale.

Egyptian law adds its own rule. If the sale includes a contest or giveaway, the Consumer Protection Law bars announcing it until you notify the Consumer Protection Agency at least three days in advance (Article 14).

Offer Types to Build Your Black Friday Ad On

The offer is the message. Each type below suits a different margin and a different goal.

A Straight Discount on Selected Products

A straight discount is simple to understand and easy to compare. It costs the most margin, and repeated too often, it teaches shoppers to wait for the next sale.

A Bundle Instead of a Single-Product Discount

Pair a best-seller with a slower product at one combined price. The order value goes up, and the discount spreads across more margin.

Free Shipping During the Sale Season

Free shipping removes a cost the shopper sees at checkout. It often tips a hesitant shopper without touching the product’s price.

A Gift With Purchase Instead of a Discount

A gift adds value without cutting the price. It protects the price your customers remember once the season ends.

Black Friday Ad Ideas That Actually Sell

An ad that sells answers three questions fast: what the offer is, why now, and why from you. The four ideas below do that in different ways.

Countdown Ad Before the Sale (With Example)

A countdown shows a real deadline. Example: “Black Friday prices end Sunday at midnight. Order before then and pay on delivery.”

The deadline must be real and match the landing page.

Early Access for Existing Customers (With Example)

Early access rewards the list you built in October. Example: “You’re on the list. Our Black Friday prices open for you 24 hours before everyone else.”

Before-and-After Price Ad (With Example)

This ad shows the old price next to the sale price. Example: “Was EGP 1,200. Now EGP 899 until 30 November.”

The old price must be one you actually charged. Egypt’s Consumer Protection Law lists price reductions that aren’t real among deceptive practices (Article 9). Fines run from EGP 50,000 to EGP 2 million, or twice the product’s value, whichever is greater (Article 66).

Guarantee and Easy-Returns Ad (With Example)

A guarantee removes the risk of buying from a store the shopper doesn’t know yet. Example: “Not right for you? Return it within 14 days, no questions asked.”

In Egypt, that promise matches the law. Article 17 of the Consumer Protection Law gives buyers fourteen days from receipt to return or exchange a product for a cash refund, with no reason and no cost. A few exceptions apply, such as perishable goods.

Retargeting Abandoned Carts During Sale Week

Sale week fills carts that never reach checkout. Shoppers add items to compare prices across stores, then leave.

A shopper who left a full cart already chose the product, which puts that order closer to completion than any other. Reach them within days, with the item they left and the sale’s deadline. For why carts get abandoned in the first place, read our analysis of cart abandonment.

Cash on Delivery in Black Friday Season

Under cash on delivery, the dashboard counts an order the moment the shopper submits it. The money arrives only when the courier hands over the parcel.

Jumia reports that failed deliveries made up 25% of its gross cash-on-delivery orders in 2025. Cancellations, failed deliveries and returns together reached 24% of all its orders, up from 23% in 2024.

Confirmation Pressure and Refusals at the Door

Sale week packs a month of orders into a few days, and confirming each one gets harder. Jumia’s annual report flags delivery disruptions as a risk to its reputation, especially during key sales events like Black Friday.

A discount wins the click, but it doesn’t guarantee the shopper is home, or still wants the item, when the courier arrives. Jumia’s report also notes that prepaid orders reach much higher delivery success than payment on delivery.

Paying ahead is within reach for most Egyptians. The Central Bank of Egypt reports that 54.7 million citizens, 77.6% of those aged 15 and over, owned active transaction accounts by the end of 2025, mobile wallets and prepaid cards included. A small prepaid incentive in sale week is a marketing decision, not only a payment one.

Nearby Seasons Between October and November

Black Friday sits in a crowded stretch of the calendar. 11.11, the Singles’ Day sale, lands on 11 November and opens the discount season early on several marketplaces.

Cyber Monday follows on 30 November, and the year-end holidays come right after. Plan these as one run, so each campaign feeds the next audience instead of competing with it.

A Black Friday Campaign Timeline to November

The timeline below sets what each stage should achieve, so the budget moves with the audience.

October: Build the Audience and Test Ads

Reach the people you want to sell to with video and content. Collect early-access sign-ups and test messages on small budgets.

Early November: Warm-Up and Waitlists

Announce the date, push sign-ups, and move budget to the ads that won in October. Retarget everyone who engaged during the build-up.

Sale Week: Turning Interest Into Orders

Put most of the budget on search, retargeting and the waitlist. Watch delivered orders daily and cut whatever doesn’t convert.

After the Sales: The Second Purchase

New customers from sale week are the season’s real asset. Reach them in December with a reason to buy again at full price, which is where their customer lifetime value starts to show.

Analyzing Black Friday Results After the Sale

The dashboard closes the season the day the sale ends. The real result takes a few more weeks to show.

Delivered Orders, Not Placed Orders

Count the orders that arrived and stayed. A sale week that looked strong in the dashboard can shrink once refusals and returns come in.

Customer Cost Compared With Normal Days

Divide everything the campaign cost by the new customers you actually won, then compare it with a normal month. A higher cost can still pay off if those customers come back.

New Customers Who Bought Again Later

The real return shows in January and February. Track how many sale-week buyers placed a second order at regular prices.

Black Friday Numbers in the Egyptian Market

Few public figures isolate Black Friday in Egypt. The closest come from Jumia, a NYSE-listed retailer whose annual report names Egypt among the markets generating a larger share of its orders and revenue. Its figures cover all nine of its markets, not Egypt alone.

Here is how its fourth quarter of 2025, the one that includes Black Friday, compared with the third:

  • Orders: 5.6 million in the third quarter, 7.5 million in the fourth
  • Gross merchandise value: $197.2 million in the third quarter, $279.5 million in the fourth
  • Quarterly active customers: 2.4 million in the third quarter, 3.0 million in the fourth
  • Sales and advertising expense: $7.0 million in the fourth quarter, up 47% year on year, out of $19.4 million for the full year

One quarter brought about a third more orders and 600,000 more active customers than the one before it. The spending to win them rose with it.

Advice from Brand Brew for Black Friday Profit

Set the Campaign Goal Before the Platform

Pick one goal first: sales in sale week, a lead list waiting for the offer, or clearing specific stock. That goal then decides the platform, the offer and how you measure success.

Start Your Black Friday Campaign in October

Use October to build a warm audience and test your ads. By sale week you are retargeting people who already know you, with an ad you already know works.

A Black Friday Campaign Is a Burden You Can’t Afford to Learn On: Why Hand It to Specialists

Running Black Friday well is a two-month job, done during the busiest weeks of the year. Two reasons make it hard to carry alone.

What the Campaign Takes: Planning, Budget, Ads and Content Across Several Platforms at Once

From October to the end of November, the campaign needs an audience plan, offers priced on margin, creative for three platforms and daily budget calls in sale week. Each piece depends on the others.

For a business owner, all of that runs alongside stock, suppliers and staff, at the moment each of them needs the most attention.

One Mistake in Sale Week Can Waste the Whole Season’s Budget

A wrong audience, a rejected ad or an offer priced below margin costs most in the week that matters most. There is no second sale week to win it back.

How to advertise Black Friday?

Start in October with ads that build an audience, then use sale week to convert it with search ads, retargeting and a clear offer. Price the offer from your margin, keep every claim consistent with the landing page, and judge the campaign by delivered orders.

What are the best promotions for Black Friday?

The best promotion fits your margin and your goal. Bundles and gifts with purchase protect margin, free shipping removes a cost at checkout, and straight discounts work when the margin can carry them.
