How to Ensure Your Website Appears in AI Responses (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimization

There’s a difference between ranking for a question and being the answer to it, and that difference isn’t about your position on the page — it’s about whether your name appears before the customer stops reading. Your customer asks about a problem you solve, the answer comes back carrying names, and yours isn’t among them. This article sets out what that shift changes for your business, and how to judge whether it warrants a move in your market.

What answer engine optimization is

Answer engine optimization is the work of getting your business named inside the answer that search engines and AI assistants generate, rather than appearing as a link in the list beneath it. The difference between the two is less technical than it is a difference in where the decision happens: in a list the customer compares and chooses, while in an answer a choice is handed to them along with a reason to trust it.

It is frequently confused with search engine optimization. The relationship is one of extension rather than opposition: the foundations that make your site legible to a search engine are the same ones that make it quotable inside an answer. The difference lies in what gets measured and how content is framed, not in the nature of the work.

What answer visibility changes for a business

For years the measure of search success was the visit. Today part of the decision happens before any visit reaches you: the customer reads an answer, leaves it with names and an impression, then begins their journey from a point you are either inside or outside of.

The practical consequence is that a high ranking no longer guarantees the customer arrives, and that the business named inside the answer earned its first degree of trust before the customer opened any site. That changes what you should be measuring: the visit still matters, but it is no longer the only indication that you are present in your market.

The shift in numbers

The clearest published measurement of this shift comes from Pew Research Center, which analyzed the actual browsing behavior of 900 US adults during March 2025:

When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional search result link on 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared.

Clicking a source link inside the summary itself happened on just 1% of visits.

26% of visits ended the browsing session entirely when a summary was present, compared with 16% without one.

60% of searches beginning with a question word produced a summary.

88% of summaries cited three or more sources.

The first figure explains the decline in visits. The second settles your strategy: if being cited rarely produces a click, the click was never the prize. The last is the reassuring one — a single answer names more than one business, and the space is available.

(This data is American and dates to March 2025. No comparable published measurement exists for the Egyptian market to date.)

Which businesses in Egypt are exposed

The test is simple: do your customers ask before they buy, and does the answer they receive name suppliers? Pew’s data adds a third condition — questions phrased with a question word are the most likely to produce answers, and that describes precisely how a buyer searches ahead of a significant decision.

E-commerce and online retail

Buyers ask about a product category and where to buy it before opening a single store, so the comparison happens somewhere you weren’t present.

Specialized B2B services

Procurement begins with a question rather than a call, and by the time a buyer makes direct contact the shortlist has usually formed.

Wholesale and distribution

Buyers weigh suppliers on terms, coverage and reliability before any conversation opens, and absence from that comparison reads as absence from the market.

Private clinics and service centers

The question about a service or procedure precedes the question about who provides it, and the names attached to the answer inherit whatever trust it carries.

How to judge whether AEO is worth pursuing in your market

This judgement needs no tool, only three questions in order.

Do your customers ask at all? If purchase decisions in your category come from relationships or direct referral rather than search, the effect is limited no matter how well the work is done.

Do the answers name anyone? Some questions are answered with general explanation and no supplier named at all, and those are questions with no position inside them to win.

Is your competitor named while you are not? This is the single indicator that turns the subject from a deferred opportunity into an existing gap that widens over time.

If all three answers are yes, the work has a measurable return. If the first is no, your priority is something else.

What to look for before you commission this work

Four questions are worth asking before a contract, not after one.

How is it measured? Visibility inside an answer doesn’t appear in conventional ranking reports. Ask to know the measurement method and its frequency before work begins, not three months in.

How does it relate to your existing search work? If it is described to you as a track entirely separate from search engine optimization, ask why the separation exists.

Does it include measuring the competitor? Knowing your own position without knowing your competitor’s gives you half the picture, and it is the less useful half.

Can the answer be no? A party with no scenario in which they tell you the work isn’t worth it in your case has not assessed your case.

Brand Brew’s perspective on answer engine visibility

Our approach to AEO marketing begins with measurement rather than a proposal. We first establish the questions your customers ask in your category and record the names that come back inside the answers, which turns the comparison between you and your competitors into something demonstrable rather than an opinion.

And because our departments work in sync — search, data and advertising in one team reading one dashboard — the effect of this work appears in its correct place within the full picture of your performance, rather than as an isolated metric. When the numbers say the return doesn’t justify the work in your category, we say so. This is also why our AEO services in Egypt start with a measurement conversation, not a pitch.

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO vs SEO?

Search engine optimization works on your site’s position within the list of results. Answer engine optimization works on your business being named inside the answer that precedes that list. The foundations overlap substantially; the difference is in what gets measured and how content is framed.

Is ChatGPT an answer engine?

Yes. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI summaries all deliver a composed answer rather than a list of links, and that is what makes them answer engines regardless of their differing technologies.

What’s the best answer engine optimization tool?

Tools in this space measure rather than produce. Any tool will tell you where you were named and where you weren’t, but none of them creates a reason for an engine to name you. That reason comes from the quality of what you publish and the credibility of its source; the tool only reveals the outcome.

Do I need to pay for AEO separately?

No. The work that produces visibility in answers is the same work that produces visibility in search results, and it is delivered within a single engagement.

Do I need to stop my current SEO work?

No. Stopping your search work weakens your presence in answers rather than strengthening it, because a source the engines don’t trust in their results is not one they cite in their answers.

What kind of business is AEO not right for?

Businesses in their first year, and businesses where the purchase decision comes from a direct relationship or personal referral rather than from search. In both cases there isn’t enough question volume in the market to build on.

Presence inside the answer is measured, not guessed

Your customers are already asking, and the answers already name businesses. The only open question is whether yours is among them in your market.
